I started my dog training career at PetSmart in 2013. Over the last ten years I've transitioned my focus from obedience to behavioral issues that need correction inorder to remain in society. I've had six dogs personally. A few were extreme behavioral cases, I've also helped dozens more learn the basic foundations.
One of my very first jobs was in a pet store that sold lots of exotic birds, especially parrots. Parrots can be possessive over food dishes, that's where I first learned about target training or "clicker" work.
Target training is standard zoology practice for moving large or dangerous animals from one area to another, by having them move towards and touch a target for a reward.
As early as I can remember I've been fascinated by animals, going to the Royal Winter Fair or Toronto Zoo as a child or summer camp, catching frogs and fishing. I've always been obsessed with them!
Growing up as a C.O.D.A (child of deaf adult) we spoke A.S.L (American Sign Language) which uses physical signs or gestures, body language and facial expression to communicate. I've always felt I have a unique insight when observing animals, we grew up speaking the same language. kinesthetic learning, allows us to do "predictable pattern processing."
I can't imagine a more fulfilling feeling then seeing all of my hard work and consistency pay off; by pairing up a dog I've trained to not only be someone's companion but their lifeline. It's always sad to see a dog go but ultimately you know you've helped them live their best life and are now helping someone else live theirs!
